UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
O,VERVIEW
Working with UDOT, UTA and UVU, Kraemer as the CMGC contractor built the pedestrian bridge that provides access between the Intermodal Center in Orem and the UVU campus. The bridge spans almost 1,000 feet across I-15 and is 15 feet wide. Elevators on each side of the bridge accommodate pedestrians, bikes and scooters. The $30.7 million bridge project dramatically improved safety for pedestrians and decreased congestion on nearby streets. It makes transit, biking and walking more appealing to University students, staff and visitors while improving the integrated transportation system in central Utah County. It’s the longest pedestrian bridge in the state, and includes elevators for ADA access, a heated bridge deck to eliminate the icing of the bridge deck, and unique aesthetic elements to connect with the university.
INNOVATIONS

The bridge is highly visible, beautiful, unique, and iconic. It was a collaborative effort between many agencies. This engineering and construction marvel overcame unusual challenges of balancing aesthetics and function as they were both highly valued. Constructing the roof was one of the major challenges of the project. Each 30-foot roof section was constructed only a few miles north of the project. Building the roof sections off-site (instead of in place or above I-15, College Drive, UTA tracks, and UPRR tracks) saved several months on the schedule and provided a safer working environment.
“There is nothing more epic than this bridge that’s going to carry students to their educations and eventually to their dreams.”
